The Dancing Vase
Susie Martin
About the Artist
Susie Martin grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania.  After she
graduated from high school in 2000, she attended Elmira
College in New York.  Martin originally had plans to major in
Biology and had intentions of becoming a Zoologist.  As roads
change in life, Martin decided Biology was not the road for her.
Martin realized her passion and talent in ceramics after her first
Raku class.  After having a discussion with her adviser, she
decided to major in Art with a specialization in Ceramics.  She
continued to take ceramic courses and become a teacher’s
assistant for Ceramics I and Raku.  Martin entered her work in
college exhibitions and during her senior year she received a
Second Honorable Mentioned Award for her pregnant figures,
Dreams.  After Martin graduated in 2004, she returned to her
hometown, where she continues to produce pottery and enter in
exhibitions.
Martin has always been fascinated with vases, which made her
experiment with different ideas and techniques in order to
achieve her sense of style.  Her artwork is primarily focused on
hand building techniques and altered wheel thrown pieces.
She is known for her series of Dancing Vases, which shows the
direction of Martin’s artwork.  These vessels carry similar
characteristics from their glaze to their form.  Each vase is
asymmetrical with free flowing curves and angles.  Their design
allows them to carry their own appearance, life, identity and
form.

Another series that Martin has created are her pregnant
sculptures, Dreams.  These figures are in various poses and
do not contain any heads or limbs.  The small sculptures are
primarily focused on the life that is being created and the joy of
carrying a child.  Theses figures are influenced by Martins life
situations, which are expressed, threw her ceramics.

Martin’s artwork can be seen at Gallery 20, Five and Divine
and the GoogleWorks.
